Week 4 results are in! We have had another incredible week with 81,284 total minutes read by students and teachers so far. Below are the results for Week 4 and the top readers in each grade.  This week, we also had 22 more new students achieve "Mountain Lion Reader".

A special congratulations to Ms. Yerrick's Class who had 100% pariticpation this week.  Great job to these wonderful students!

Just one more week to go!

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

·        Please remind students to bring in their reading log AND sponsor pledge envelopes with money collected from their sponsors in on MONDAY, JUNE 2nd.  Students who bring in both of these to school will be entered into a raffle for prizes such as gift certificates to the Brown Dog Bookstore in Hinesburg and to Recycled Reading in Bristol and a t-shirt from Cookie Love in North Ferrisburg.  If students forget to turn in their reading log and sponsor pledge envelopes on Monday,  we are hoping that students bring them before the Closing Ceremony if possible.  Certainly, we are happy to collect the reading logs and sponsor pledge envelopes anytime before the end of the year, but would love to have it sooner than later if possible.  I’ll be sending out reminders in the school newsletter and Facebook as well.

Week 3 results - 57,359 total minutes read so far!

Week 3 results are in! We have had an astounding 57,359 total minutes read by students so far!

This week, we had 21 new students achieve "Mountain Lion Reader" status by meeting their individual goals of 450 minutes for students grades K-3 and 600 minutes for students graders 4-6, bringing our number of Mountain Lion Readers to a total of 33. These readers receive a certificate to a free cone at the Village Creemee in Bristol as well as earn a vote in which teacher or staff member will kiss a cow during the Closing Ceremony on Thursday, June 5th. We will pass out the voting slips the first week in June once we have a complete list of all the students who have completed their reading goals as Mountain Lion Readers.

Also, a special recognition to Ms. Carter's class who had 100% of students in the class bring back their reading logs for the second week in a row!  Wow!  Also, Ms. Way’s class reached 100% participation for the first time this week as well.  Great job to these students for their wonderful participation.

TWO IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

1.      We will be having “Character Dress-Up Day” this Thursday, May 22nd where students are encouraged to come to school dressed up as a character in their favorite book.  They are welcome to bring a copy of their favorite book to school as well.  Any reminders about this would be helpful.  Holly Esterline will be taking photos of students with their books for the three classes that have library that day and she suggested stopping by the other classrooms that don’t have library that day for additional photos.  Only photos of students that have signed the release form from their parents will be up on the blog.

2.      Since there is no school Monday, May 26th, reading logs will be collected on Tuesday, May 27th for Week 4.  Please help remind students to bring in their logs on Tuesday!

Mountain Lion Readers and Jon Muth's Visit

I hope all the students are enjoying Week 3 of the Read-a-thon and are exploring and discovering new and exciting books on their reading journey!  I wanted to acknowledge all the many, many minutes that students are reading so far, but to especially congratulate the twelve students who have already reached "Mountain Lion Reader" status (450 minutes for K-3 and 600 minutes for 4-6).  We are celebrating their success by posting their names and a pawprint in the hall just outside the library, and know that there are many more students who are well on their way!  Each week, as more students reach this goal, their name will also be put up on the wall.

We also wanted to share this painting that was done by Jon Muth during his author's visit last Thursday, May 22nd.  He created three painting while we was with our students, one of which he left for the students and signed it for them.  It is currently hanging up in the library.  Again, we are so grateful to Flying Pig Bookstore in Shelburne for the gift of bringing Jon to our students.  You can find more photos of the actual event of Jon Muth in the Monkton Central School gym at the Monkton Central School Library website.

Week 2 Results

We had another wonderful week full of reading by students!  We have had an astounding 31,336 total minutes read by students and teachers so far!  A reminder that if your student forgot their log on Monday, if they bring it in next Monday, May 19th.  Every minute counts!  Also, if students have misplaced their reading logs, they can be downloaded and printed from this blogsite.  Just go to the "Forms" tab above and click on "Reading Log."

It was also exciting to see twelve students already achieve their "Mountain Lion Reader" status by meeting their individual goals of 450 minutes for students grades K-3 and 600 minutes for students graders 4-6.  It is amazing that students have reached these month long goals in just the first 12 days!  Congratulations to these avid readers!

Week 1 Results are In!

What a fantastic first "week" (May 1-4th) of reading! It was very exciting to see the reading logs come in and all the wonderful minutes read by the students.  A special thanks to Erin and Meredith for helping with the tallying.  A reminder that if your student forgot their log on Monday, if they bring it in this coming Monday, May 12th, their minutes from Week 1 still count!  We will back log their minutes.

Also, the first time students bring in their reading log, they will receive a pass to the Ben & Jerry's Factory in Waterbury.  Each student will get only one pass on their first time turning in the log, whether their first time was this past week or if their "first time" is in a week ahead. Please note that students 12 and under are free at the Factory anyway, but this pass can be used for the adult who drove them or anyone else accompanying them who is older than 12 years old.  We are grateful to Ben & Jerry's for donating these passes to Monkton Central students!

Ready, Set…READ!

The kick-off to the Read-a-thon has begun! Today, a reading log for the month of May and a bookmark should have gone home with your child. Please initial their log every night after they have recorded the minutes spent reading (or being read to) outside of classroom hours.

Also, please help to remind your child to bring their reading logs to school each Monday morning throughout May! They will be returned that same day to bring home again. The first time each student brings in their log on a Monday, they will receive a pass to Ben & Jerry’s Waterbury factory.

Please remember that children can continue finding sponsors any time through the end of May!
