Final Results!

With our Read-a-thon theme, Reading is My Superpower!, we hope that the time students spent reading that helped explore new books and discover more about themselves and the world around them.

Our final tally of total minutes read was really impressive – 157,116 total minutes read by students, teachers, and staff in 30 days! We had 152 students, teachers, and staff participate by turning in reading logs at least once throughout the month and 85 students reached Mountain Lion Reader status (450 minutes for grades K-2, 600 minutes for grades 3-4, and 900 minutes for grades 5-6).

We also raised $3,383.58  for PTO activities such as trips to the Flynn Theater, classroom field trips, providing after school enrichment opportunities, the Four Winds Nature Program, contributing toward programs such as the Artists in Residence, helping provide materials for classrooms and much more! 

Events such as Steve Swinburne’s author visit, “Who’s Your Hero” Dress-up Day, Mystery Reader Week, and Drop Everything And Read were all fun and celebrated the reading students had been doing.

Thanks to all the students for the many hours they put into reading, to the parents for encouraging their students, for the community for supporting through sponsor pledges, and for the teachers and staff for their engagement and enthusiasm!  A special thanks to the Read-a-thon mascot PAWS and the committee members Holly Esterline, Betsy Knox, Katie Kuzio, Stephanie Murray, Sarah Rouiger, Casey Underwood, and Anna Lester.  A special thanks to parent volunteers Betsy Brown, John McNerney, Jen Stanley, Liz Gustin, and Helen Norris for help with tallying and counting.

Reading is My Superpower surprise!
For all the students who earned Mountain Lion Reader status, they got to vote on teachers or staff members who volunteered to do something heroic at the Closing Ceremony. The 3rd place winner was Ms. Foley, the 2nd place winner was Ms. Pierpont, and the 1st place winner was Ms. Livingston!  Ms. Foley and Ms. Pierpont became super villains and tried to duct tape Ms. Livingston to the wall with the help of their minions (the students with Mountain Lion Reader status).  Luckily, Ms. Livingston was able to use her super-strength to break free of the duct tape!  Scroll down through photos below for a picture of Ms. Livingston stuck to the wall.

Week 4 results are in! We have had another incredible week with 124,461 total minutes read by students, staff and teachers so far. Below are the results for Week 4 and the top readers in each grade.  This week, we also had 25 more new students achieve "Mountain Lion Reader".  Great job to these wonderful students!

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

·    Please remind students to bring in their reading log AND sponsor pledge envelopes with money collected from their sponsors in on MONDAY, APRIL 2^nd. Students who bring in both of these to school will be entered into a raffle for prizes such as gift certificates and other items!  If students forget to turn in their reading log and sponsor pledge envelopes on Monday, we are hoping that students bring them before the Closing Ceremony on Thursday if possible.

Week 3 results are in! We have had an astounding 90,803 total minutes read by students so far! 

This week, we had 27 new students achieve "Mountain Lion Reader” status by meeting their individual goals of 450 minutes for students grades K-2, 600 minutes for students grades 3-4, and 900 minutes for students grades 5-6. bringing our number of Mountain Lion Readers to a total of 41. These readers earn a vote in which teacher or staff member do something “heroic" during the Closing Ceremony on Thursday, April 5th.We will pass out the voting slips a day or two before the Closing Ceremony once we have a complete list of all the students who have completed their reading goals as Mountain Lion Readers.

COMING UP – Mystery Reader Week!  A short passage from a book will be read during lunchtime and students will have the chance to guess the book title, author, and who is the “mystery reader.”

Thanks to everyone who participated in "Who's Your Hero?" Day!  Below are some students as their heroes.

Week 2 Results

What a great second week of reading!  We have had an astounding 33,495 total minutes read by students, teachers, and staff so far.  A reminder that if your student forgot their log on Monday, they can bring it in next Monday, March 19.  Every minute counts!  Also, if students have misplaced their reading logs, extra copies can be found in the main office.  Special thanks to John McNerney, Betsy Brown, and Liz Gustin for helping to tally minutes Monday morning.  Any parent who would like to help tally minutes on Monday mornings are more than welcome...any help is appreciated!

A reminder that children can continue finding sponsors any time through the end of March.

This Wednesday, March 14th, is "Who's Your Hero" Day where students are encouraged to come to school dressed up as a hero - this could be a hero from their favorite book or any other type of hero they choose such as a parent, sibling, teacher, coach, professional role, musician, artist, athlete, etc.  We hope to be taking photos of students for the classes that have library that day and perhaps stopped by the other classrooms that don't have library that day for additional photos.  Only photos of students that have signed the release form from their parents will be up on the blog.  Any extra help in reminding students would be wonderful!

LOOKING FOR HELP – we are looking for parent volunteers who might be willing to help us hang fabric capes in the hallway that students will be creating in Art Class depicting their favorite book hero.  We will be hanging the capes on Thursday, March 15^th beginning at 7pm…any help is appreciated!  Also, we always welcome anyone who might have time on Monday mornings from 8-9am, or whatever amount of time you are able to give, to tally reading logs.

Tuesday, March 6th was our Author’s Visit by Steve Swinburne, a Vermont author from South Londonberry.  Steve Swinburne was born in London, England. When he was 8, he left England with his family and sailed on the Queen Elizabeth to New York City.  Steve holds a bachelor of arts degree in biology and English from Castleton State College, Vt. He has worked as ranger in a number of national parks.  He loves to travel and observe nature and wildlife. A safari in Africa, hiking in Scotland, monitoring sea turtles on a Georgia island, a winter trek through Yellowstone and watching shorebirds in New York have all led to book projects.  When Steve is not writing and photographing children's books, he loves to sing and play Beatle songs on his Gibson guitar, garden, read, travel with his family and take pictures.  Steve's photography has appeared in magazines such as COUNTRY JOURNAL, VERMONT LIFE, GARDEN DESIGN, FAMILY FUN and HIGHLIGHTS FOR CHILDREN.

What a fantastic first "week” (March 1-4) of reading! Students, teachers, and staff already read 19,135 minutes! It was very exciting to see the reading logs come in and all the wonderful minutes read by the students. A special thanks to Betsy Brown and Helen Norris for helping with the tallying. A reminder that if your student forgot their log on Monday, if they bring it in this coming Monday, March 12^th, their minutes from Week 1 still count! We will back log their minutes. Also, if students have misplaced their reading logs, there are extra copies in the main office or can be downloaded from this blog under the "Forms" tab.

Also, the first time students bring in their reading log, they will receive a coupon for a free cone at Ben & Jerry's. Each student will get only one coupon on their first time turning in the log, whether their first time was this past week or if their "first time" is in a week ahead. We are grateful to Ben & Jerry's for donating these passes to Monkton Central students!

Welcome to the Monkton Central School Read-a-thon blog!

It's that time again for our Spring fundraiser!  We loved all the enthusiastic participation of our students in our last three Read-a-thons and the support of our school and local community, that we are excited to do it again.  This year, our read-a-thon theme is "Reading is My Superpower!"  Students will be looking for sponsors to pledge money for the minutes they will read beginning Friday, February 16th and will start their month long reading challenge from March 1-30th.

This blogsite is a way for students and parents to get more information (see the "About" and "Forms" tabs) as well as a well for all family, friends, community members, parents and students to see our journey through books. We will be posting our classroom tallies, photos from special events like the author visit and "Who's Your Hero" Day, as well as encouragement for students to keep on reading!

If you would like to Sponsor a child and pledge money towards the Read-a-Thon, please let your child's classroom teacher or Holly Esterline, school librarian, know. If you are a community member and would like to Sponsor a child who might be in need of a Sponsor, please email Anna Lester at alester@smcvt.edu.
