Final Results!

With our Read-a-thon theme, Reading is a journey…explore and discover!, we hope that the time students spent reading was a journey that helped them explore new books and discover more about themselves and the world around them.

Our final tally of total minutes read was really impressive – 102,326 total minutes read by students and teachers in 30 days!  We had 113 students participate by turning in reading logs at least once throughout the month and 80 students reached Mountain Lion Reader status (450 minutes for grades K-3 and 600 minutes for grades 4-6).

We also raised over $4400 for PTO activities such as trips to the Flynn Theater, classroom fieldtrips, providing after school enrichment opportunities (such as Kempo, Drama, Chess, etc.), the World Language Program through Middlebury College, the Four Winds Nature Program, contributing toward programs such as the Artists in Residence, helping provide materials for classrooms and much more!

Events such as Scholastic Book Fair, Jon Muth’s author visit, Character Dress-up Day and Mystery Reader Week were all fun and celebrated the reading students had been doing.

Thanks to all the students for the many hours they put into reading, to the parents for encouraging their students, for the community for supporting through sponsor pledges, and for the teachers for their engagement and enthusiasm!  A special thanks to the Read-a-thon committee members:  Susan Stewart, Holly Esterline, Stephanie Murray, Meghann Goetz, Casey Underwood and Anna Lester.  A special thanks to parent volunteers such as Erin Dufault and Kristin Blanchette for help with tallying and counting and Curtis Layn for providing our cow for kissing.

1.      We will be having “Character Dress-Up Day” this Thursday, May 22nd where students are encouraged to come to school dressed up as a character in their favorite book.  They are welcome to bring a copy of their favorite book to school as well.  Any reminders about this would be helpful.  Holly Esterline will be taking photos of students with their books for the three classes that have library that day and she suggested stopping by the other classrooms that don’t have library that day for additional photos.  Only photos of students that have signed the release form from their parents will be up on the blog.

2.      Since there is no school Monday, May 26th, reading logs will be collected on Tuesday, May 27th for Week 4.  Please help remind students to bring in their logs on Tuesday!

Mountain Lion Readers and Jon Muth's Visit

I hope all the students are enjoying Week 3 of the Read-a-thon and are exploring and discovering new and exciting books on their reading journey!  I wanted to acknowledge all the many, many minutes that students are reading so far, but to especially congratulate the twelve students who have already reached "Mountain Lion Reader" status (450 minutes for K-3 and 600 minutes for 4-6).  We are celebrating their success by posting their names and a pawprint in the hall just outside the library, and know that there are many more students who are well on their way!  Each week, as more students reach this goal, their name will also be put up on the wall.

We also wanted to share this painting that was done by Jon Muth during his author's visit last Thursday, May 22nd.  He created three painting while we was with our students, one of which he left for the students and signed it for them.  It is currently hanging up in the library.  Again, we are so grateful to Flying Pig Bookstore in Shelburne for the gift of bringing Jon to our students.  You can find more photos of the actual event of Jon Muth in the Monkton Central School gym at the Monkton Central School Library website.

Week 2 Results

We had another wonderful week full of reading by students!  We have had an astounding 31,336 total minutes read by students and teachers so far!  A reminder that if your student forgot their log on Monday, if they bring it in next Monday, May 19th.  Every minute counts!  Also, if students have misplaced their reading logs, they can be downloaded and printed from this blogsite.  Just go to the "Forms" tab above and click on "Reading Log."

It was also exciting to see twelve students already achieve their "Mountain Lion Reader" status by meeting their individual goals of 450 minutes for students grades K-3 and 600 minutes for students graders 4-6.  It is amazing that students have reached these month long goals in just the first 12 days!  Congratulations to these avid readers!
